Event Details

In looking at The Linda Lee Alter Collection of Work by Women at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA) and The William and Uytendale Scott Memorial Study Collection of Art by Women Artists at Bryn Mawr College, the curators sought to understand how these artists represented their subjective conceptions of femininity, social spheres, and political opinions in their works, asking the questions: Does gendering their work limit its interpretation somehow? Is this issue binaric, or is it interrelated and much more complex? This lecture will address these questions through an examination of historical and contemporary museological curation models that feature works by women artists, collection histories and practices specific to these collections and more broadly, and the conversations among works at each site of the exhibition.
