"Now, I Have a Theory": Experience, Expertise, and UFOs in Cold War America

7:00 PM - 8:30 PM
Cherry Hill Public Library
Conference Center, Lower Level

Event Details

A vast majority of reports of unidentified flying objects in America have come from average citizens, often referred to as “non-expert”. Despite the lack of professional credentials, these witnesses have been crucial to making scientific knowledge about UFOs. Dr. Kate Dorsch will explore how UFO sightings have allowed non-scientist citizens to challenge the expertise and authority of scientists and how these historical conflicts and challenges helped citizens understand their own relationship to the modern American state. Dorsch will also discuss how the history of UFO studies reflects current scientific and political issues.
