Hip Hop History: With former Geto Boys member DJ Ready Red, Collins Leysath

The late 1980s was an exciting time for hip hop: the premiere of Yo! MTV Raps, the creation of Grammy category for Best Rap, and the introduction of a new sound: gangster rap. Collins Leysath, aka DJ Ready Red, was in the forefront of that new sound as an original member of the Houston-based group, the Geto Boys. As pioneers of southern hip hop, they would push themselves onto the west coast/east coast scene and change the rap world forever. As DJ Ready Red, Collins performed and produced on the albums “Making Trouble" and genre-defining "Grip It! On That Other Level," rated five stars by The Source and considered one of the Top 100 rap albums of all time.

Join Collins for an evening hosted by Charles Brown, Dean at the Rutgers School of Business, as they talk about the history of hip hop, life inside the music industry and the influence of southern hip hop and gangster rap. At the conclusion of the interview, there will be a Q&A. Registration is suggested but not required.
